C'mon in to the Dragon's Den. All are welcome here.
There's always a good tune playin', and in the fridge, a beer.
There's lot's to talk about Dragons, and we're a busy crew so I'll use this space to write when I have time and you can catch up when you have time. Here's the latest talk in the Dragon's Den:

I'm off to the park to find out who wins A and B (update: 2RBI beat Powerline for "A" Division and Caliente went on to beat Clean Rite for "B" Division -- Deep Cold won the season). But we have already found out that we won the big one! Thanks to all the teams that voted for us. We wouldn't enjoy our games as much were it not for the many great people who make this league fun. Thanks to Kim and the new exec. I look forward to next season already.

Final notes - Dragons went 2-3 in the tournament with our wins against Misfits and Northern Ice. Great games were played against Caliente, Clean Rite and the Tribe. From my figurings, we finished third for the B division - that's an improvement over our season finish. Good work Dragons! We had a lot of laughs during our games, a lot of amazing plays, a few bad calls, and a couple of injuries. We'll be back next year for another run at it.
Congrats to our recognized players including Dexter as the funniest Dragon, Brenda T. and Troy with the Tough Chick and Tough Guy titles, Leanne as our Most Improved Player, Sue as our Most Sportsmanlike Player, and our two Dragons who share the title of Most Valuable Player - Scott and Linda. Scott, we certainly missed you on the weekend -- it is an honour to share the title with you.
I'm hearing that we have some past Dragons that want back in. I'm also hearing that all of this year's Dragons want to return in '07. Since we have to cut it off at 20 players, this is how I'll fill the roster next year: From my first call for players, all 2006 rostered Dragons will have 15 days to respond with a deposit. After 15 days, I will extend the call to all past rostered and/or tournament players and/or immediate family of current Dragons (including Nap's family) and provide another 15 days. After that time, we will begin recruiting new players if we still have spots to fill.
Bowling is on Thursday's at Woodlawn Bowl - if you come out to bowl or just to cheer, you'll find many Dragons there after 7PM. Have a safe and happy winter everyone. This is my last update until......you guessed it......SNO PITCH!!!! Talk to y'all after Christmas.
Tournament Schedule: We finished in 11th place. Congrats on the improvement from last year. Let's ride this wave of optimism all the way to Sunday afternoon!

Most Sportmanlike Team: This is the largest trophy in our league and is awarded to the team that shows sportsmanship and is selected by a vote from all teams. Nap's motto was "Number 1 is to have fun" and this award was donated to the league by the Dragons and dedicated to his memory.
Team awards: We will again this year recognize our Most Valuable Player, our Most Improved Player, and our Most Sportsmanlike player. I'll bring vote slips to the next game for those that wish to vote anonymously, otherwise, feel free to email your picks to me. If you don't vote, I'll enter my name for all three categories on your behalf :)
Funniest Joke competition!!! Send me your favorite joke over the next two weeks and I'll post it to our joke page. I'll print them off and bring them to the tournament and we'll let Mick decide who is the funniest Dragon. Haha, that's my joke!!!
Team Party: Open for discussion. There are negative funds after the purchase of catcher's gear. We will hit a restaurant, pass a cap or arrange pot luck. Since we finish at Earl both days, I'll offer up my place for festivities unless we get a better offer.
Catcher's gear: Has been purchased! Unfortunately, it is a man's world when it comes to sporting goods, so our "special" cut in a "custom" color will take a while to prepare. I have a new mask that we can use for the tournament. The rest will be waiting for us in the spring.

Final Standings
Powerline 15, Dragons 14
Another good game against a fun team. It was looking pretty grim for a bit when Powerline took such a big lead. Sue knocked down those liners and kept them to singles while we got our bats warmed up. What more can be said about Scott's line-drive, opposite field, in the park grand slam but WOW! That started the rally and we caught up quickly, but there wasn't enough time left to finish them off. Good run - ready for playoffs?
Squirrels 17, Dragons 9
What a fun game last night team! We mixed up the batting order and got off to a strong start but the sun got the best of us in the field and the mighty Squirrels mounted a steady comeback. It was great to see Troy squeak through that last homerun and I thought for a moment that Sherman's big hit was looking at clearing the fence. It was definitely a night for the girls all around and nice to see the guys on both teams back pedalling for those big hits. Oh and Dave has lost his "tough guy" title - Troy is the one to beat now with 812 on the punch machine. Brenda T. is still undefeated for the "tough chick" title at 576.
Northern Ice X, Dragons, X-1
There you go - some algebra to get us into shape for September. We're looking pretty good for playoffs. Dexter came up with that first grounder and I readied myself for the throw to one -- was it just me, or did that diamond seem to be much larger than before? At any rate, Matt's first big in-the-park homer certainly confused their fielder who was running back in perfect line with the ball, but as soon as he took his eye off it, it hung a right and touched down on the green -- nice to see those big hits on such a big field. While we are still recovering from the weekend, it was a good team effort and a great game. No repeats of Jeremi trying to swim back to third after a big wipeout rounding for home....sorry guy, had to put that in - that was something to see indeed!
Dragons 8, Tribe 1 at inning 3
Doug, the best ump we've had all summer, took a foul to the nose and called an early end to our game. I spoke to Doug last night, it's definitely broken and I wished him a speedy recovery from the Dragons. We want to see him behind the plate for playoffs! Trevor's lineup seemed to be working so we'll keep it on file and use it next week. We're going to try to replay the game, but looking at the short time we have left, we may just end up calling it a tie.
On another note, the new punching game at the Real Deal is a great adrenaline machine and a heckuva lot cheaper than roller coasters at Wonderland. Brenda T has the "tough chick" title so far beating my best punch by a full two points. Little Dave holds the "tough guy" title. Maybe we should determine the batting lineup by punch rank so if you drop by the Real Deal, be sure to email me your score :)
I'm starting to get pumped for this one! Special rates are available at a local hotel - ask me if you think you'll need one and I'll inquire further. We've also been reminded that games are rain or shine. We've enough players for two teams this year so we'll need to divvy ourselves up. (Brenda's team is the Hydroponics). There will be Tim Horton's coffee & Donuts available to purchase at the diamonds for $2, so no need to stop on the way!
8am – Jacob's Team vs STS – Diamond 1
8am – AALP vs Hydroponics – Diamond 2
8am – Kiwis vs OMAFRA – Diamond 3
9:15am – Drill Bits vs DEKALB Yielders – Diamond 1
9:15am – A/Z Dragons vs Master Batters – Diamond 2
9:15am – Aussies vs Master Fielders – Diamond 3
The rest of the schedule is mapped out and will be posted for teams to follow at the tournament. Those who lose their first game will play again at 10:30, those who win their first game will play at 11:45.
Remember, this is a fun and social tournament, please respect your teammates, opposing team players, the umpires (who are volunteers) and the tournament organizers.
The game of 3-pitch uses the regular slo-pitch rules with the following additional regulations:
Badgers 21, Dragons 3
What I really want to know is what did Will ever do to Mick? They must have been roomates in a former life or something....ah well, I've got a plan to deal with Mick: we won't play any more games at Lyon's this year! Apparently, Guelph's cops are all on vacation this year. I don't think I've ever seen that many badgers on the bench before.
Caliente 7, Dragons 6
So other than Sherman's brilliant efforts to lay down a bunt (yes, BUNTing is forbidden in our league :) the game went pretty much as I expected. Close right to the end. Good work on pitching the game Trev. And Karen, thanks for reminding us of the importance of chatting it up on the field. Phil's Summer Birthdays Rock party did just that - rocked - and those in attendance had a great time. Next week is COPS so let's bring it Dragons!!
Purple 23, Dragons 5
Well here we are again with another almost no-hitter. Anyone up for practice next week while we have no games? Looking for something to do this weekend? Why not check out the Novice Provincials which are being held July 27 - July 30, 2006. You can find the games on July 27/28 at Guelph Lake, July 29th and 30th at Exhibition Park Also upcoming are the 2006 Midget Girls Fastpitch Championship which will be held Aug 6th to Aug 13th at Exhibition Park, details and live feeds at www.girlsfastpitch.ca. Want to watch some harball? We've got an event for that too: The Guelph Silvercreeks are hosting the Junior National event in August at Larry Pearson Park in the South end - Aug 23rd to Aug 28 and the website is www.guelph2006.com
2RBI 9, Dragons 3
I just don't know what it is - we could take the best batters from MLB and recruit them as Dragons, and we'd still end up with scores like this. Good job keeping 2RBI in check at 9 runs -- too bad we left so many stranded. I guess we were thrown off from the get go when it was discovered that Bill Clinton was the first TWO batters for their team!
Powerline 22, Dragons 15
I lost track somewhere after our "one bad inning" - it surely was looking like a big night for the Dragons up to that point. Maybe if the ump and i weren't so busy beating each other up behind the plate, I'd know the score. Welcome back to Will, Troy and Karen. I can't believe that we are in the second half of summer already! Dexter showed his sensitive side by gently directing the ball towards the ground, meanwhile the girls (self excluded) came out with the big bats last night - way to go!! Oh and good news for next week maybe? Caliente (Fazzari) kicked some 2RBI butt last night. Our turn next week!
Deep Cold 22, Dragons 7????
Seven? I couldda sworn I heard someone say 11! I thought we'd get a reward from the Karma gods when Phil carefully moved a butterfly to safety on the other side of the fence. I'm sure if we could have gone another 7 innings, the game was ours! Zuber's signature "opposite field liners" seemed to be honing in on Scott while Trevor pitched the popup pitches to Jeremy, shaking him up just like in the good old days when he was our third baseman. Oh and I did a good deed by turning off the lights at Lyon's at 2 AM, those darn Cops almost cost us a surcharge! Surely all this stored up karma is due to be cashed in soon!
**** means a rainout game is outstanding, NR means that no score was reported.

Squirrels 13, Dragons 10
Thankfully, our one bad inning doesn't count since we didn't get our last bats due to darkness (thanks Phil). We get to roll back to the last complete inning. Close game!
Trevor's pitching saw us through our short innings and kept the game tight. Brenda took some hits at the hot corner and came up with her ever present smile then Sue's double play took us out of what could have been a long one. We had some good laughs too - glad that the football team didn't use Dave as a tackle dummy while Dexter was searching for something in the trees.....
I'm pumped for Saturday. I'll write more next week. I'm on holidays now.
Dragons - we've been challenged to come up with 100 dollars and Phil will shave his head to raise funds for Breast Cancer research. For more information, visit Phil's Blog at http://philallt.ca.
Fockers 20, Dragons 5
Bad calls, dropped balls and our signature "one bad inning" led to our defeat last night. There's not a lot to write about after a four and a half inning game, especially when we "stink up the diamond so bad" as Phil put it last night. Not sure I entirely agree with that sentiment -- there was plenty of stink from the other team and especially from the ump who seemingly has something against Dexter....
But on the upside, it's great to see our new players finding their rhythm -- Phil with a homerun and Leanne with a fantastic out at 2 -- and Becky staring down them big boys coming at her has reminded me about true sportsmanship - were it me, I'da had the knee up!!
Northern Ice 18, Dragons 18.
For a while it was looking like we might be facing a mercy until Trevor and Dave flipped the caps around to start our 8 PM rally. What an inning it was! By the bottom of 6, and after Matt's stunning Grand Slam, we were up by 2 runs. Unable to hold the win, we settled for a tie. I'll give Sue the accuracy award for those good guns from Rover. Too bad the ump couldn't see it that way!
Oh, and if you missed the game, the new shirts are in, and do we ever look good! I'll bring them to the park next Thursday or you can drop by to pick yours up. Thanks Rob! Subs and Non-players for whom shirts were purchased will be asked for a small donation to the catcher's gear fund.
Wowie Zowie!!!! What a start! This is the league stats to date, not including 2 games that were called due to rain****.

Ah well, it had to end sometime. Wigger did his thing and we didn't. Scott - your consistent bats were sorely missed last night. So today, my ego is a tad bruised, but not nearly as badly as Trevor's eye. What happened you ask? Here's Sherman's eyewitness account: "The ball went bung, bung and Trevor just went ah". Dexter disagreed with this account and offerred up this version: "The ball just went right off that there edge the glove and before he's moved it went bung". At least they agreed on the bung - which became the main topic of discussion at the Deal. Trevor, perhaps you can provide the million dollar answer: What does it look like today? Is it a closer, a goose-egg, or just a bad bruise? Follow this link for the answer :)

Change of plans -- We're going girls on Catcher, Rover and 1 or 2. If you are getting picked on in the field, switch it up. When they find you again, switch it up again!! Anything goes in these tournaments - well, almost :)
Friday June 16: I just got off the phone with Marlene and we're all good for next weekend. I've confirmed that the fees work out to 20 dollars each to play. Although the schedule is not yet finalized, we do not have a Friday evening game -- our first game is at 9 AM sharp and we'll find out the other games times once we get there.
Original post: Our first tournament this year will be the Elora Rocks tournament at the community fields in Ponsonby. Ball, horseshoes, barbecue, bar and lots of sunshine all in order for the day.
The games are on Friday night and Saturday. Style of ball is 3-Pitch. We field 9 players with at least 3 gals and we pitch to our own team. Batting order is alternate guy/gal/guy/gal so the gals get lots of bats and even more running :)
Please let me know as soon as possible if you are able to play. When we have a team coming together, I'll post a tentative tournament roster.
Dragons 6, Buff 2
Another win by the Dragons! Way to go team! Notable play of the game, Becky's launching of Dexter high over our heads to bring us the double play. Good work! The last time we played the Cops was at the City of Guelph tournament last year. We were to play them for the championship game but we decided on a tie due to rain. Most of my team has never forgiven me for making that call, so last night we proved once and for all who the winner should have been. Watch your speed for the next few days!!
Dragons 12, Fazarri 9
Many thanks to Zap and Dan who arrived on the scene to "shovel" the diamond. Because of them, the game played out with just a bit of trouble at third base. Hip Hip Hooray - I give these guys a vote for a good game with lots of sportsmanship. Zap was careful to remind me that had they two more players, the game could have ended up very differently!
Dragons 10 players, Misfits 6.
Deaner and Mike got stuck at the job site in Schomberg leaving his team short 2 players and bags. Dragons can chalk up our first win to a default by the Misfits. Too bad -- they are a team originally spawned from the Dragons that we enjoy playing against. This was our only scheduled game against them this year. There were no games at Lyon's due to rain last night. Let's hope that our win will still stand and that at least one other game completed last night. Thanks to all my players who made it out in the rain. That's the spirit!
Update: Powerline's game completed at the Lake. Our win will stand! Yay!
Purple Haze 18, Dragons 16.
Never have I been so happy for a loss. Purple is the team with the guy who once hit 47 consecutive balls out of Guelph Lake and we didn't even have fences last night!! Our new players are astounding. Our former players are re-charged. And since some of us actually got up twice in one inning, perhaps sharing the stick won't be so bad if it happens this year. At times last year, we were lucky to get up twice in a GAME!!!!
Definitely a big victory. Next week, we face off against a team that we were competitive with last year. Can't wait :)
Good news Dragons - We've found a sponsor! Rob has generously offerred to purchase shirts for our full time players. After going through all the options, we chose the same shirt, different colour. It will see us through the transition well, and since Will spends so much time in the dirt anyways, he might not even need a new shirt! Rob's web address will be printed on the back of the shirt.
Once I have everyone's size and number choices, we can expect our shirts (and an updated website at that address :) about two weeks from the time I place the order. For sizing, the shirt is Fruit of the Loom – with a standard fit. If there is a tie in number selection, seniority will decide. If tied in seniority, first to pay in full ($100) will prevail. I will reserve numbers for Dragons with seniority who are either spares or not playing due to pregnancy but intend on returning next summer. If you are such a player and want a shirt, or if you like to have an extra shirt, we'll have to discuss how to do this fairly.
Please note that we have retired Nap's number 32.
This picture is close to what we'll have:

With a full time roster of 12 and the accumulation of "5 bucks" dollars, we will reach a surplus this year. This will put the purchase of new catcher's gear within reach by mid-summer. Let's work hard to fill that last spot so we can finally update our equipment.
Just think - this could be ours - follow this link for some cool Dragon catcher wear on Ebay.

This year, spares will not be permitted to play unless we have enough Gals to avoid "sharing the stick". For those unfamilliar with our league rule, we can bat no more than two Guys more than we have Gals in the order - ie: with 4 gals, we can only bat 6 guys in the order, with 7, two must share one batting position. From my conversations so far, Iris and Stephanie will be available most nights that they may be needed, so I hope we won't be penalized by this rule.
The schedule is posted here or on the sidebar. I will post the Tuesday schedule there when I receive it (note to self, pay Void captain so I can have a schedule). Tournaments will be added to the sidebar if you want to fly under the Dragon banner.
Maps are updated and posted on the sidebar. I added a map to Centennial. Note to Tuesday players - this Centennial is not the diamond in front of College Heights. Tuesday players will know this diamond as Joe Kaine. For us old Guelphites, you will probably know it as "Municipal, the one down by the bus barns". Even though our team is fortunate to have no games there this year, I have added a map for Corrections. Does anyone know what diamond AA is?
Sunday practices were off to a slow start this year so we haven't gotten together as a full team yet. Although aware that there are many who can't make Sundays, I did hear a few votes to continue so we'll keep going for a couple more weeks. Perhaps we at 1 Stone Road can coordinate a round of catch over the next lunch hours. Let me know if I should bring a glove in.

This website is dedicated in loving memory of Napoleon Andruskievicz (A/Z), our founder, coach, friend and mentor who we miss dearly. Baseball is not the same without you buddy. Rest in peace Nap.
